What is Steel

What is Steel
Steel is a versatile material that is used in a wide range of applications. By understanding the different types of steel products available, you can select the right product for your specific needs.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, with carbon being the key element that distinguishes steel from iron. Steel contains anywhere from 0.002% to 2.14% carbon, more than wrought iron, and less than cast iron.

Addition of small amount of carbon to iron results in significant physical enhancements making steel both harder and stronger than pure iron. This Steel is also called as carbon steel .

Steel = Iron + Carbon + other elements

Steel is a versatile material used in countless manufacturing applications, including cars, airplanes, ships, buildings, and tools. There are two main classifications of steel: hot-rolled and cold-rolled.

By adding additional alloying elements, such as chromium, nickel, manganese, and vanadium, can further enhance its properties.

Types of Steel #

Steel products are classified in many different ways, depending on their composition, shape, and purpose. Some common types of steel products include:

  1. Based on manufacturing process: hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel
  2. by Alloys
  3. by Carbon Content

Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Steel #

The terms “hot-rolled steel” and “cold-rolled steel” refer to the way in which the steel is produced, rather than the specific type of steel.

Hot rolled steel

Hot rolled steel is a type of steel that is produced at high temperatures. During hot rolling, molten steel is pressed at extremely high temperatures, typically reaching or exceeding 1400 °C. This is important because steel recrystallizes at roughly between 400 and 700 °C, which allows it to be reshaped. Once the hot-rolled steel has cooled, it is ready for use or sale.

Cold rolled steel is produced by rolling hot-rolled steel at room temperature. This process increases the strength and hardness of the steel, but it also makes it less ductile. Cold-rolled steel is often used for applications where strength and hardness are more important than ductility, such as car bodies and appliances.

Steel Classified by alloys

Carbon steel is the most common type of steel, and it is made up of iron and carbon. Carbon steel is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, including construction, automotive manufacturing, and appliances.

Alloy steel is carbon steel that has been mixed with other elements, such as chromium, molybdenum, or nickel. This gives the steel special properties, such as increased strength, hardness, or corrosion resistance. Alloy steels are used in a variety of applications, including aircraft manufacturing, power generation, and oil and gas drilling.

Stainless steel is a type of alloy steel that contains at least 10.5% chromium. This gives the steel excellent corrosion resistance, even in harsh environments. Stainless steel is used in a wide range of applications, including food processing, medical equipment, and architectural components.

Tool steel is a type of alloy steel that is specially designed for making tools. It is characterized by its high hardness and wear resistance. Tool steel is used to make a variety of tools, including cutting tools, dies, and molds. more »

Steel Types

The four types of carbon steel are low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, high carbon steel, and ultra-high carbon steel.

Low carbon steel is the most common type and contains 0. 04-0. 30% carbon. It is very ductile and easily formed, so it is commonly used for most everyday products, including piping, nails and wire drawing. It is also the least expensive type of carbon steel.

Medium carbon steel is the second most common type, containing 0. 30-0. 60% carbon. It has better wear resistance and a more reliable structure than low carbon steel. It is commonly used for socket head cap screws, gears, crankshafts and rails.

High carbon steel contains around 0. 60-0. 95% carbon, and is typically used in cutting tools such as chisels and knives. It also has higher engineering properties than other types of carbon steel, so it is often used in axles and springs.

Ultra-high carbon steel is the strongest and has the highest carbon content of all the types. It contains up to 2. 0-2. 5% carbon, and is often used for knives and other cutting tools. It is also very brittle and hard to work, so it is not commonly used in most everyday applications.

Steel Rusting #

Steel rusts because iron, the main component of steel, is a reactive metal. When iron is exposed to moisture and oxygen, it undergoes a chemical reaction that produces rust, which is a form of iron oxide.

By understanding the causes of rust and the factors that can accelerate rust formation, you can take steps to protect your steel from corrosion and extend its lifespan.
